Copenhagen Fashion Week street style: Too cool to care

I love Fashion Month, as much for the street style as for the catwalk action. The sight of various fashion luminaries desperately trying to be photographed in all the designer labels they’ve been sent is both amusing and frequently inspiring.

But in the few weeks before NYFW kicks off, I’m having to make do with Copenhagen Fashion Week. Well, make do isn’t really the right expression because CFW street style can give the bigger cities a run for their money.

It’s full of Scandi cool and the kind of low-key casual style that actually has a lot more to do with the way the real world dresses than the Big Four fashion weeks do. OK, it veers towards gender-neutral and urban rather than the kind of looks lots of people like to wear, but that’s only to be expected, it is Copenhagen after all.

So what did we get this time? Some interesting clues to where denim is going for a start. Looks like frayed and uneven hems are the thing, mixed in with light and dark panels and overall slim-but-not-skinny-cuts. Jackets stick to the classics.

Anyone who wouldn’t be seen dead in a coat should layer their camo or khaki jackets with some sweats to stay cosy when the temperature drops.

And as for coats themselves, it’s time to make a statement. Bright colour, unusual detail, leopard print or motifs/patches are all on the list to make a coat an unmissable fashion piece this winter.

But for most of the visitors to CFW, making too much of a statement really isn’t the thing to do. Whether it’s tailoring mixed with denim or joggers, bikers layered over hoodies or simple sweats, the one rule is – don’t look like you’ve tried too hard.
